In a distant kingdom lived a king who had a beautiful daughter. She fell in love with a humble peasant boy. whom she wanted to marry. The king, who had no intention of consenting to the marriage, suggested that the decision be left to chance. The three were standing in the castle's forecourt which was covered with innumerable white and black pebbles The king claimed to have picked up one of each color, and put the two pebbles into his hat. The suitor had to pick one pebble from the hat. A white pebble meant that he could marry the king's daughter: a black, that he was never to see her again. The peasant boy was poor, but not stupid. He noticed that by sleight of hand. the king had put two black pebbles into the hat.
How did the suitor resolve his predicament without calling the king a cheat?
In picking a pebble, the peasant knocks over the hat, spilling out the second black pebble. In so doing, the peasant announces that he must have the white pebble since the black one fell out of the hat.
Another way of resolving it is for the peasant to say that he has picked the white pebble because of the color pebble left inside the hat. Since the king will not/cannot admit to having two black pebbles, the peasant wins.
A third way is for the peasant to pick a pebble from the hat but clumsily drop it on the ground. Since, by virtue of the setup, he must have picked up the color opposite of that which is in the hat, the peasant gets to marry the king's daughter.
